The Best Black Bean Burgers

These black bean burgers are easy to prepare, flavorful, and delicious. The black beans are combined with cornmeal, salsa, and spices, to create a substantial meatless patty.

Equipment

  • Grill, a pan or a griddle

Ingredients

  • 2 (15 ounce) cans black beans, rinsed and drained
  • ¼ cup cup of cornmeal
  • ½ cup all purpose flour
  • ½ cup mild salsa
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 2 teaspoons ground cumin
  • Hamburger buns
  • Lettuce (optional)
  • Tomato (optional)
  • Avocado (optional)

Instructions

  • Place beans in a food processor and process until fairly smooth (leave some pieces of beans intact)
  • Add cornmeal, flour, salsa, garlic, and cumin, and process until ingredients are combined.
  • Line a plate or sheet with parchment paper. Spoon mixture into six large balls.  Refrigerate for at least two hours.
  • Coat a grill, a pan or a griddle lightly with oil, and heat. Place the patties on the cooking surface, and cook 4-5 minutes per side-until browned and heated through.
  • Serve on buns with lettuce and tomato (and avocado if you choose) or in lettuce wraps!
